  • There are several causes of brown spots on the face. Age spots, certain medications, unprotected exposure to the sun, genetic factors and hormonal fluctuations all play a role in their development. The level of seriousness can also vary. Some brown spots signify serious disease, while others are mere cosmetic annoyances.

    Age Spots

Age spots manifest in spots that are gray and black in addition to brown. They develop on the side of the face, but may also be present on the hands, arms and shoulders. Age spots are caused by both genetic predisposition and a rise in melanin levels. Melanin is a pigment that defines skin tone and can increase through exposure to the sun. Despite the name, younger people can develop age spots, but they are most common in people over 40.

    Medications

Certain drugs, called phototoxic medications, can cause your skin to become more sensitive to sun exposure. As a result, you may develop a rash or what appears to be a sunburn before developing brown spots, which can occur on any part of the body exposed to the sun, including your face. Some examples include antihistamines, drugs used to treat acne and medications used to treat arthritis.

    Melasma

Melasma may be either brown or gray and may show up in spots or in large patches of discolored skin. The condition is caused by sunlight, genetic factors and hormonal fluctuations. Women who are pregnant or taking birth control pills may experience melasma that clears up immediately after they give birth or stop taking the pills.

    Actinic keratosis

Actinic keratosis cause patches of rough and/or scaly skin, along with raised bumps that may be red or brown. These bumps are very uncomfortable and usually painful. This is caused purely by exposure to the sun. People who develop actinic keratosis frequently develop skin cancer as well.

    Seborrheic keratosis

Seborrheic keratosis is much less severe than actinic keratosis. It manifests in small, harmless brown moles or warts. The primary factor for this form of keratosis seems to be genetics, but additional factors are not currently known.

    Treatment/Prevention

Although prolonged exposure to sunlight is not the culprit for every one of the reasons for brown spots on the skin, limiting exposure is the best way to prevent them in the long term. Treatment will depend upon the type of brown spot you have, but brown spots can usually be harmlessly removed through laser therapy, topical creams, oral medications or dermabrasion therapy.

  • The most common cause of brown spots is sunburn. Brown spots from sunburn usually appear on the part of skin skin that are exposed to the sun, such as the face and arms.
  • The most common cause is a sun damage. Brown spots from sun damage usually appear on those areas of the skin that are naturally exposed to the sun, such as the face and the back of the neck. The best way to prevent dark spots from sun damage is to use sunscreen with UVA protection.
