    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Skeleton keys are normally used to open doors of some type. The image of the keys has been around since ancient times, and in popular culture, books and movies, the key has taken on a more sinister meaning.

    Identification

According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, the term "skeleton key" dates to the early 1800s and means a key that can unlock any simple lock. But today, it has come to symbolize anything that can unlock a mystery.

    Misconceptions

Skeleton keys have come to symbolize magic or death. This is mainly thanks to old stories and movies like the 2005 film "The Skeleton Key."

    Function

Skeleton keys are still used in homes today. They've come to symbolize fine cabinet and wood furniture work.

    Theories/Speculation

According to at least one website, skeleton keys symbolize talismans that can help you get through a time of change.

    Fashion

Skeleton keys also symbolize fashion and can be worn around your neck.

please don 't take this as gospel. I think said skeleton keys could be folded and moved into different shapes allowing them to fit themselves into all sorts of door locks. A great big. I THINK.

A skeleton key (also known as a passkey) is either a key that has been altered in such a way as to bypass the wards placed inside a warded lock or an American term for a lever or "bit" type key.
