Consumer Reports publishes refrigerator ratings on its subscription-based website, and has a section specifically dedicated to brand reliability. The study surveyed 86,500 users who owned refrigerators between 2005 and 2009, and reported that 16 percent of those who owned LG top-and-bottom models had serious problems with their fridges. Whirlpool was the best in this category--at only 8 percent--while GE trailed the pack, coming in at 25 percent.

On the Other: Their Side-by-Side Models Aren't

The same report had LG coming in dead last in side-by-side models, with 21 percent of participating owners mentioning repairs or serious problems. The overall spread was less substantial than with the top-and-bottom refrigerators; Whirlpool was tops in this category but still came in at 15 percent.

    Bottom Line

While some LG models rate well in ease of use and energy efficiency, reliability simply isn't one of the brand's strong suits, according to Consumer Reports. If reliability is the chief concern in your planned refrigerator purchase, consider other brands.
