Venlafaxine HCL works by preventing the breakdown of a chemical in your brain known as serotonin, which is responsible for a variety of functions. These include arousal, body temperature, mood, appetite, sleep and pain sensation, according to Macalester University.

Uses

Psychiatric conditions treated with venlafaxine HCL include depression, anxiety and panic disorders, seasonal affective disorder and social anxiety disorder. Additionally, doctors prescribe venlafaxine HCL for relief from hot flashes and migraine headaches.

Time Frame

Doctors typically prescribe venlafaxine HCL for use two or three times per day, reports the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Specific dosages vary based upon the type of condition being treated and its severity.

Warning

Venlafaxine HCL has the potential to worsen or cause depression in patients, particularly during the first few weeks of treatment. This depression may result in suicidal thoughts or behavior, particularly in people under the age of 24, warns the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

Considerations

Because its effects upon fetal development are unknown, doctors rarely prescribe venlafaxine HCL for use by pregnant women. If you have a history of bipolar disorder, bleeding or heart problems, glaucoma, hypertension, electrolyte imbalances, seizures, hyperthyroidism, kidney or liver disease or mania, it may not be safe for you to take venlafaxine HCL because of its side effects, the Mayo Clinic says.
