  • There are many different ways to clean silk flowers, from dusting sprays to vacuuming or blow-drying the dust away. While these can work, some of them are a little pricey while others just blow the dust all over your house. The best way was probably discovered by a housewife and was passed down to her daughters. Using rice, salt or cornmeal, you can shake that dust right off of your silk flowers.

Common household items can usually work a double purpose, and this is true for cornmeal, rice and salt. Any of the three work, although one may work better for your type of flowers than another. This would be difficult to use on a silk tree or large arrangement, but if you are working with just the flower head or a flower on a stem, it will work just fine. Place a cup of your dry ingredient in a large zip-top bag. Put the flowers inside the bag and zip it closed. If you are cleaning a long-stemmed flower that will not fit completely in the bag, zip it shut as far as it will go and hold it shut around the stem with your hand. Shake the bag, getting the salt, rice or cornmeal to go all in and around the flower. Continue doing this for about two minutes. Be sure to shake the bag gently, however, as you do not want to beat the flowers to a pulp. Take the flower out of the bag and shake off the excess dry ingredients. Your flower should be dust-free. If they are not quite as dust-free as you would like, do it again for a few more minutes. This method works because the rough particles that you are using act similar to a scrub brush. They get inside the small spaces in the flowers and rub the dirt right off. You can save the salt, rice or cornmeal in the bag for another couple of uses before it gets too dusty to use again.
