  • Check this interesting link: http://www.animationarchive.org/2006/10/biography-grim-natwick-on-animation.html There you will find the essay "Design for Animation" by Grim Natwick, that explains it. The bottom line is that in the early days of animation - when each frame was drawn by hand - it was just easier to draw three-fingered hands. It just looked better. Quote: "Who invented the three-fingered hand? Someone way back in the dark ages of animation got tired of drawing hands with four fingers and simply left one off, and cartoon hands have been much easier to animate ever since. It was a stroke of genius. The four fingered hand disappeared from animation until "Snow White" (1937). Somehow a pretty girl didn't look right with only three fingers. But the Seven Dwarfs still had three fingered hands."

  • Not only were they easier to draw, but if I remember correctly, weren't they always white, and didn't there appear to be buttons or something on the back of them? They were gloves - real and from the 1300s-1400s. LOL "Several people have asked me about my 3 fingered gloves. Back in Jan 2002, a question was raised on the 75 Years Group at Yahoogroups (A re-enactment discussion list focusing on c1300) regarding the use of gloves in the 1300s. Although a number of depictions of the more familiar 5 fingered gloves were seen, there were also several examples of 3 fingered gloves found in pictures from the 1300s and 1400s..." from http://www.personal.utulsa.edu/~marc-carlson/cloth/gloves/gloves.htm
