Essential hypertension (high blood pressure) is a dangerous condition that can lead to further health problems, including heart disease and heart attacks. Fortunately, there are several treatment options to help you control your blood pressure.
Diuretics
According to the Mayo Clinic, diuretics are the first choice in treating high blood pressure. They help rid your body of excess fluid and sodium.
Beta Blockers
The Mayo Clinic states that beta blockers can help reduce blood pressure by reducing the workload on the heart. African Americans tend to respond less favorably than Caucasians and usually require a combination treatment.
Ace Inhibitors
In an online article, Burton D. Rose, M.D., claims ace inhibitors help open constricted blood vessels. This helps increase the flow of blood through your body and decreases pressure.
Calcium Channel Blockers
According to Burton D. Rose, M.D., calcium channel blockers reduce the flow of calcium across muscle cell membranes. Calcium causes muscle cells to contract. With reduced muscle contraction blood can travel more freely through the body.
Lifestyle Changes
According to the Mayo Clinic, making lifestyle changes significantly reduces the effects of essential hypertension. Patients who exercise, maintain a healthy weight, avoid alcohol and smoking and choose healthy foods stand a better chance of affecting their symptoms in a positive way.
