  • Sewing boxes are vitally important to both beginning sewers and experienced ones. These boxes can also come in handy for the few sewing needs of a non-sewer. Preparing one ahead of time comes in handy for those times when you need it right away. There are a few important things that must be in all sewing boxes.

    Scissors

Scissors, or sewing shears, are handy when cutting fabric or thread. Be careful not to use them on paper, or they will become dull very quickly.

    Needles

Needles sew up a patch, fix a seam or sew on an embroidered design. They come in several different sizes and are inexpensive.

    Thread

If you do not sew except in emergencies, you can probably get away with having only white and black thread in your sewing box. Experienced sewers have every thread color imaginable, and these threads will probably not fit all in the sewing box. Keep the primary colors handy in the box, however.

    Pins

Pins are used to fix patterns to fabric, hold a seam until it is sewn or to mark lines to sew along. Packages of 250 pins are cheap and will disappear fast if you are working on several projects. Pincushions are also helpful to hold the pins.

    Other Items

Seam rippers to rip out incorrect seams, chalk pencils to mark lines and measuring tapes are also good to have in a sewing box. Odds and ends that may come in handy also are strips of Velcro, buttons and a rotary cutter.
