Linchen Planus is a skin disease that can appear anywhere on the body but is typically found on the wrist, forearms, ankles and mouth. It is generally found in middle-aged adults and very rarely in children.
Function
Currently, the exact cause of Linchen Planus is unknown, and because of its similar appearance to many skin diseases, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish. A biopsy must be completed to truly diagnose.
Identification
Linchen Planus appears on the skin or in the mouth as uneven red or purple bumps with flat heads. White scales or flakes can sometimes be noticed if the sores are examined closely.
Significance
There are treatment options to limit the appearance and discomfort, but Linchen Planus is incurable. It typically will clear up within 18 months but can return in the future.
Treatments
A variety of treatment options can be utilized by medical personnel, such as antihistamines, corticosteroids, topical retinol cream or dressings that are used to prevent itching.
Considerations
Linchen Planus is not contagious, so avoiding body contact with others is not necessary to prevent sharing of the disease.
