Heatstroke is a serious heat-related illness that can happen for a number of different reasons. However, it always occurs because a person's body temperature is extremely high, 104 F or above, and it cannot be lowered fast enough without intervention.
Activity
According to the Mayo Clinic, strenuous activity can raise body temperature and lead to exertional heatstroke. This will happen more likely to people not used to working in warm temperatures.
Environment
Nonexertional heatstroke can occur because the temperature is high and makes your body temperature rise quickly. You do not need to be performing activities to suffer from nonexertional heatstroke.
Heat Cramps
Heat cramps are muscle pains that can lead to heat exhaustion and then heatstroke. These happen in exertional and nonexertional environments and can be treated with rest or hydrating the body with drinks like Gatorade.
Heat Exhaustion
According to the Mayo Clinic, heat exhaustion happens when heat cramps aren't treated properly and can also occur after prolonged periods of exposure to high temperatures. Symptoms include headache, nausea, cool or damp skin, and dizziness. If heat exhaustion isn't treated properly, it can lead to heatstroke.
Other Causes
Heatstroke can also be caused by dehydration, drinking too much alcohol or wearing heavy clothing.
