  • Air conditioning is difficult to live without in some areas of the country, while in most others it is a nice option to use several times during the heat of the summer. On occasion problems develop that require the replacement of the a/c compressor. Changing the a/c compressor does require some outside help, in most cases, but isn't actually a difficult task.

    What to Do First

Unless you are absolutely certain that there is no refrigerant in the a/c system, you must have the a/c system pumped out professionally. Releasing the refrigerant into the air is illegal. Most auto repair facilities can do this for you. Have them check the system for leaks also--you don't want to replace the compressor only to discover that the condenser or another expensive part has a leak. While you're at it, you might also want to make arrangements with them to refill the system when you're done .

    Replacing the A/C Compressor

Depending on your budget, you may wish to replace your a/c compressor with a used unit. New and rebuilt units seldom include the electric clutch, a cost which must be factored in at your planning stage. Regardless of your decision to use a used or rebuilt part, the actual replacement procedure is the same. After the system is drained, unplug the electric clutch connector, disconnect the a/c hoses, remove the drive belt, remove the attaching bolts and list the compressor from its brackets. You may find it necessary on some cars to remove the electric clutch from the compressor to gain access to the mounting bolts. Place the replacement compressor in the brackets, align it properly and replace the mounting bolts. Replace the clutch if it was removed, install the drive belt and attach the hoses. Do not plug the electric clutch in at this time, wait until the system has been recharged with refrigerant and compressor oil. Make sure you tell the person recharging the system that the clutch is not plugged in, and he will do so when he recharges the system.
