  • Herpes is a disease caused by the herpes simplex virus, spread by sexual contact. It can affect men and women. In women, herpes appears in flareups as a rash in and around the vagina.

    Significance

According to the Mayo Clinic, most people with herpes remain asymptomatic and will never know they are infected. But people who do experience outbreaks will easily recognize the disease's distinguishable course.

    Identification

While the first outbreak of herpes is usually the worst, the first symptoms include pain and itchiness. Next, small red bumps will appear around the vagina.

    Effects

After a few days, the bumps around the vagina will erupt and ooze pus or blood. Once the oozing stops, these sores will scab over and then heal.

    Considerations

According to the Mayo Clinic, herpes ulcers can appear inside the vagina, around the genitals, on the cervix, on the buttocks or in the anus.

    Other Signs

Besides the rash, women with a herpes outbreak may have flu-like symptoms and pain when urinating. Herpes symptoms will vary from woman to woman.
