Certain characteristics of oatmeal are thought to be beneficial for general skin care. In fact, oatmeal has been used for hundreds of years to treat dry, itchy and irritated skin.
Starch
Oatmeal contains starch, which has been found to be helpful to the skin. Starch forms into crystalline granules when bonded with hydrogen. These bundles are insoluble until heated by body temperature in an oatmeal body wrap, where they spread over the skin as a protective layer.
Skin Cleansing
As oatmeal coats the skin, it cleans the pores and removes surface dirt and buildup. Dead skin cells are cleared away when the body wrap is rinsed off, along with other debris that collects on the skin.
Moisturizing
Oatmeal has a gel-like quality when mixed with liquid. This forms a natural coating on the skin even after rinsing that protects the skin from dryness, which helps to prevent irritation and redness.
Skin Problems
Oatmeal has been reported to be beneficial for skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema and acne. These results may depend on individual skin conditions, yet there does seem to be a consensus among skin care professionals and those who use oatmeal body wraps that overall skin quality improves.
Overall Skin Quality
Once an oatmeal body wrap is removed, most people notice an overall improvement in skin tone.
