Legends
The earliest records of water births appear in ancient legends of various cultures, where women would labor and give birth in shallow places in a river or body of water.
Egypt
Egyptian records show that some pharaohs were delivered through water birth.
First Recorded Water Birth
The first official recorded water birth occurred in the early 1800s, when a women exhausted from a long labor decided to take a hot bath to try to relax. She delivered the baby in the tub shortly afterward.
New Interest
A surge of interest in water birthing occurred when researcher Igor Charkovsky and obstetrician Frederick Leboyer began to study the benefits of water birth for both the mother and child.
Water Births Today
Water births now occur widely in hospitals and home deliveries in countries such as the United States, Canada and European nations.
