  • A PTZ camera is a security and surveillance camera that allows the user to monitor areas such as retail floors, doorways, hallways, security gates and public facilities. They have become a common security feature in retail stores, airports, public buildings, parking garages, and some private homes.

    Motion Functions

PTZ stands for "pan, tilt and zoom." Pan is the function that turns the camera lens right and left. Tilt moves the camera up and down. Zoom allows the camera to move in and out on a specific object or individual.

    Dome Housing

PTZ cameras are usually housed in a small glass dome, which is why they're sometimes referred to as "dome cameras". The dome is installed on a ceiling or wall; it hides the camera movements from sight, and allows a 360-degree field of vision.

    Operation

The camera operator works in a separate room, and operates the camera using a computer keyboard, mouse, or joystick. The recorded video from the camera is stored in computer memory and can be replayed if necessary.

    Common Uses

The operator can use the PTZ camera to focus on a suspicious individual, or on a single cash register where a suspicious transaction is taking place. Outdoors, it can track individuals as they walk through an area, or zoom in and track license plates.

    Programming

PTZ cameras can be programmed to regularly sweep areas, such as parking lots, without operator input.
