According to Kristie Leong, MD, seizures in dogs can be caused by toxin ingestion, infections such as distemper, vaccinations, metabolic problems, brain tumors or an idiopathic seizure disorder. Seizures in dogs are not caused by pain, and seizures themselves are not painful for dogs. However, conditions that are causing the seizures can be painful for dogs; therefore, a full examination by a veterinarian is recommended for any dog experiencing a seizure.
