  • Teaching overseas can provide an individual with amazing opportunities to learn about a different culture and build a resume. There are American-sponsored schools all over the world, and these schools are always in need of motivated teachers. Teaching in these schools can be ideal for people with an area of expertise and a couple of years available to commit to living abroad.

    Types of Schools

Teaching overseas can be done at U.S. Government schools, such as those on military bases, or at American-sponsored schools, which are sponsored by an American organization. The latter, however, is not affiliated directly with the government.

    What is Taught

Most overseas teaching jobs involve the teaching of the English language or a specific subject to be taught in English. Very few will require the teacher to arrive in the country already knowing the native language.

    Required Credentials

Some overseas schools require that a candidate for a teaching position be fully credentialed as an educator. Some schools, however, do not require certification and will allow anyone with a college degree to teach for them.

    Time Commitment

The usual time commitment for an overseas teaching job is two to four years. If a teacher wants to stay when that time is up, the assignment can often be renewed.

    Teaching in Safe Places

Some overseas teaching jobs may be in countries deemed unsafe by the U.S. State Department. A prospective teacher should be aware of a country's travel safety status before he accepts an assignment.
