Migraines are characterized by intense pain in the head, face and neck. Pain often occurs only on one side of the head, but never in the brain itself, as the brain cannot feel pain.
Word Origin
The word 'migraine' comes from the Greek word hemikrania which means "half of the head."
Causes
Migraines may be caused by stress, physical exercise, altitude, motion, chemicals found in food and not eating. Abrupt weather changes also sometimes trigger them.
Symptoms
People with a migraine may be very thirsty, sensitive to light or sound, experience a throbbing pain and become nauseous. Tingling or numbness in the face may also occur.
Treatments
Pain relievers such as acetaminophen are frequently used. Ergotamines or triptans may also be used in certain cases. Resting in a dark, quiet room may also help.
Age and Gender Factors
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, women make up 75 percent of migraine sufferers. Migraines also are more common between the ages of 15 and 55.
