Hemorrhoids, swollen veins around the anus, are a problem that at least half the population deals with after the age of 30. Luckily, doctors have several ways of tackling this problem.
Considerations
Hemorrhoids can appear on the outside or inside of the anus, however, most of the treatment options are the same or similar for both types of hemorrhoid.
Non-Invasive Treatment
Usually, a physician will tie a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid to restrict blood flow to it--hopefully causing it to shrink and go away.
Over-the-Counter Medication
Hemorrhoids may go away on their own, so people often use over-the-counter medication, such as hydrocortisone cream, to reduce any itching or pain.
Surgery
Large hemorrhoids, or ones that do not go away after a few weeks may need surgery to remove them. A hemorrhoidectomy takes out the swollen vein and drains the hemorrhoid; this surgery permanently removes the hemorrhoid 95 percent of the time.
Prevention/Solution
People can help reduce the chances of developing a hemorrhoid by exercising 30 minutes a day to induce blood circulation and eating a diet high in fiber.
