  • The plantar nerves are associated with the feet. The network of nerves controls the motions of the muscles of the feet and relays pain from the feet to the brain.

    Origin

Plantar nerves branch from the tibial nerve at the ankle. The tibial nerve branches from the sciatic nerve, which is a branch of the spine.

    Plantar Nerves

The plantar nerves branch into digital plantar nerves. The medial plantar nerve branches into four digital nerves. The lateral plantar nerve branches into two digital nerves.

    Lateral Plantar Nerve

The lateral plantar nerve is the smaller of the two nerves and is associated with the muscles deep in the foot and the skin on the outer part of the sole of the foot. The lateral plantar nerve also serves the little toe and about half of the fourth toe. Each foot contains one lateral plantar nerve

    Medial Plantar Nerve

The medial plantar nerve is associated with the muscles in the middle part of the foot. It controls the middle portion of the sole of the foot and all the toes except the little toe. Each foot contains one medial plantar nerve.

    Plantar Nerves and Pain

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is the foot equivalent of carpal tunnel syndrom in the hands. Pain in the toes is common. Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tunnel through the bone where the tibial nerve divides into the plantar nerves becomes congested and overcrowded due to swelling.
