Fever blisters, also known as cold sores, are caused by the herpes simplex II virus and usually appear around the lips and mouth. They first appear as a red, tingling swelling and progress to small clusters of fluid-filled blisters. A crusty, brown scab will form over the fever blister as it heals, which takes 8 to 12 days.
