    All stretch marks start out purple. Stretch marks are caused by anything that makes the skin expand faster than it can handle. Human skin is very elastic, but sometimes not elastic enough. Rapid weight gain and pregnancy are common causes of stretch marks. The purple color comes from the microscopic bleeding caused by the stretching of the skin.
