<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Patons Classic Merino
This workhorse yarn features three plies of softly spun merino yarn. It's affordable ($6 as of January 2010), it has a generous put-up of 223 yards per 100 gram skein, it comes in more than 46 shades, it's available at most large craft stores and it makes textured stitch patterns pop. The merino content and light twist makes the yarn soft, but it also means that the yarn pills easily, especially in the underarm area.
On the Other: Cascade 220 Wool
This four-ply, 100 percent wool yarn comes in 100 gram skeins, each with a put-up of 220 yards. It's wool content and extra ply make it less prone to pilling. Additionally, it has a palette of more than 95 colors. In all other respects, Cascade 220 is virtually interchangeable with Classic Merino. You will have to visit your local yarn store or order online to purchase the yarn, and on average you'll spend about $7 per skein (as of January 2010).
Bottom Line
Cascade 220 is a slightly heartier yarn and it comes in many more colors than Patons Classic Merino, but otherwise both yarns perform similarly.
