  • Seroquel (quetiapine fumarate) is a medication classified as an atypical anti-psychotic. Seroquel works by affecting neurotransmitter receptors in the brain. The drug is available in several dosages, including 200 mg.

    Purpose

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Seroquel for treating symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Some doctors also prescribe it for the so-called "off-label" treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder and insomnia.

    Types

Seroquel is available in a 200 mg dosage, supplied as a round white tablet with the brand name and the number 200 stamped on one side, and the other side blank. Seroquel also is available in 25, 50, 100, 300 and 400 mg doses.

    Recommended Dosages

The recommended starting dose for schizophrenia treatment is 25 mg twice a day, with increases up to 400 mg total per day as necessary. For bipolar disorder, the recommended starting dose is 50 mg twice a day, with additional increases as necessary.

    Side Effects

Seroquel can cause many side effects. They include constipation, dry mouth, headache, indigestion, sleepiness and weakness.

    Warning

Seroquel can greatly increase the risk of low blood pressure, cataracts, high cholesterol, thyroid disorders, seizures, liver impairment, weight gain, high cholesterol, high blood sugar and diabetes. Seroquel also can cause neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a central nervous system disorder that can be fatal.
