While the exact cause of ocular migraines is unknown, there are certain links and factors that trigger them. They temporarily cause vision loss or distortion, according to WebMD, and occur mainly in women under the age of 40.
Birth Control
Certain studies have shown some links to birth control pills and a woman's menstrual cycle to ocular migraines.
Alcohol
Drinking too much alcohol, particularly red wine, can bring on regular as well as ocular migraines.
Diet
Certain foods may bring on migraines. Keeping a food diary is beneficial to see what foods trigger the ocular migraine. Chocolate and foods prepared with MSG (monosodium glutamate) are just a couple examples of trigger foods.
Stress
Excessive stress can cause an ocular migraine. It is important to take time out for relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation and massages.
Eye Strain
Watching too much television or working on computers for long periods of time can cause ocular migraines. It's important to limit this time and let your eyes rest.
