Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common orthopedic complaints relating to the foot and is characterized by pain and inflammation of the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot.
Symptoms
Pain on the bottom of the heel is the most common complaint of people suffering from plantar fasciitis. Long periods of walking may exacerbate this pain.
Treatment
Plantar fasciitis may be treated by a doctor with an anti-inflammatory. Additionally, the sufferer can perform heel stretching exercises and use shoe inserts to relieve their pain.
Causes
There are a variety of causes of plantar fasciitis including, but not limited to, foot arch difficulties, obesity, unexpected weight gain, and a tight Achilles tendon.
Prevention
Sustaining flexibility around the ankle and calf, particularly the Achilles tendon, is the optimal way to avoid plantar fasciitis.
Diagnosis
A doctor is able to diagnose plantar fasciitis after conducting a physical exam that reveals tenderness, redness, and mild swelling. In some cases, an x-ray may be taken to rule out a more serious condition.
