Acid reflux can be a discouraging situation no matter who it affects---even dogs. Acid reflux is a condition where the acid and fluid or foods from the stomach flow upwards into the esophagus.
Symptoms
Symptoms of canine acid reflux include vomiting or regurgitation of food or stomach acid, weight loss and lack of appetite. The affected dog may also whine or howl during meal time or when swallowing, which can indicate pain or discomfort.
Fasting
To start an acid reflux treatment plan, food is withheld for one to two days, followed by a change in diet and medication.
Diet
A change in diet is recommended and should consist of small portions of low-fat, low-protein meals that are given frequently throughout the day.
Medication
Some medications can be prescribed that will aid in strengthening the muscles---specifically the sphincter---thus helping to keep food and acid down, rather than allowing regurgitation.
Antacids
Antacids may be beneficial in neutralizing stomach acids in affected dogs. Antacids should only be given as directed by a veterinarian.
