According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 10 percent of people may be allergic to animals. If you are in this group and think man's best friend will have to be someone else's buddy, think again. Although no dog is 100 percent hypoallergenic, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recommends certain breeds as better for people with allergies.
Standard Poodle
The most familiar breed when it comes to hypoallergenic dogs is the poodle. A good family dog, the standard poodle has hair, not fur, and doesn't shed.
Bichon Frise
Another toy breed, the bichon frise weighs 7 to 12 pounds and has a beautiful, fluffy, all-white coat. Shedding is almost nonexistent in these playful, social dogs.
Portuguese Water Dog
The Portuguese water dog--well known since becoming "First Dog" in the Obama White House--has a short, curly coat and little shedding. Bright and easy to train, they need physical and mental stimulation, lest they act out and become destructive.
Miniature Schnauzer
At 12 to 15 pounds, this little friendly and playful bundle makes up for its size with its voice. Always on the alert, they make excellent guard dogs, yet warm quickly to guests.
Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire (or Yorkie), is Britain's royal family's dog of choice. The bright, fearless Yorkie weighs about 5 pounds, with hair that grows until it is trimmed. They have no undercoat and shed little.
