  • Salt water pool systems create chemicals which soften and disinfect the water. Pool Warehouse notes that salt water is clear, and not irritating to the body.

    Salt Cell

A salt cell, also called a chlorine generator, is installed between the pool filter and the water outlet. Salted water runs through an electrical current in the cell, breaking down the salt, producing chlorine.

    Hypochlorous acid

A chemical reaction in the cell breaks down the chlorine and delivers hypochlorous acid, a sanitizing agent that prevents algae, into the pool.

    Irritants

Chloramine, the irritant part of chlorine; which can cause red eyes, discolored hair and dry skin, is burned away during the chemical reaction in the cell.

    Adequate Salt

If the salt level is too low the system will not be able to produce hypochlorous acid. Rock salt can be added to the skimmer if this happens.

    Adequate Time

Hypochlorous acid is only produced when the pump is running. The pool system needs to run during most daylight hours.
