Diagnostic testing is used in all levels of education, preschool through college. The goal of testing is to improve students' success. Test results are used in several different ways.
Test Administration
Math tests may be computerized multiple choice or handwritten, requiring students to show how they've solved problems.
Readiness
Success in advanced classes, such as calculus and trigonometry, requires prior knowledge of specific math concepts. Testing can show whether the student is ready for the class.
Remediation
Test results can be analyzed to identify a student's strengths and areas of need. Remedial tutoring is based on individual needs.
Curriculum Analysis
Algebra instructors test students' understanding of the order of operations before instruction begins. One class may lack this knowledge, while other students are competent in this concept and ready to begin instruction at a higher level.
Promotion
Like many other states, North Carolina requires students to pass end-of-grade diagnostic assessments before being promoted to the next level. Third -graders, for example, must demonstrate knowledge of multiplication facts and math symbols.
