Six Sigma uses statistics to decrease defects in a product or process. To say something is Six Sigma means that a process works properly 99.9997 percent of the time. There are several levels of Six Sigma expertise: Yellow Belt or Champion, Green Belt, Black Belt and Master Black Belt. Six Sigma Black Belt certification shows an increased level of expertise in the Six Sigma process improvement methodology.
Requirements
A Six Sigma Black Belt trainee does not have to be a certified Green Belt before pursuing the Black Belt certification. The trainee also does not need to be an expert in statistics.
Training
The Black Belt trainee will learn the basics of Six Sigma from the philosophy and methodology to project creation and execution. For example, the trainee will understand the definition of Six Sigma and process charting to project charter creation and project closure. The training for Black Belts can cost $420 (self-study courses) to $7,400 for up to 80 hours of in-classroom training.
Testing
The Black Belt trainee will take a 150-question, four-hour, multiple choice test to gauge the knowledge of Six Sigma.
Application
Before the Black Belt trainee is certified, she must complete two projects that exhibit her knowledge and experience in Six Sigma. The projects must show the cost savings as a result of Six Sigma implementation. The project champion must sign an affidavit that verifies the project's completion and how the Black Belt trainee contributed to the project.
Salary
Six Sigma Black Belt salaries ranges from $70,000 to $197,000 per year.
