White spots on the skin can be caused by several different dermatologic diseases. White spots can occur on any part of the body such as the upper back, shoulders, legs and arms. Although not disfiguring, the appearance is usually distressing to the individual.
Versicolor
Tinea versicolor is a benign skin disorder caused by a yeast condition. This type of white spot occurs in warm, moist climates and is caused by excessive sweating. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, tinea versicolor is typically seen on the neck, upper back, chest and arms.
Vitiligo
Vitiligo destroys pigment-producing cells resulting in white patches. This is seen in individuals suffering from some type of autoimmune disease such as anemia. Stress is also a precursor to vitiligo.
Milia
Milia are tiny white bumps that develop on the nose, cheeks and chin on newborns. It is not harmful and there is no prevention. The Mayo Clinic states the best treatment is simply waiting for the skin disorder to go away, which typically happens within several weeks.
Pityriasis Alba
Pityriasis alba is very similar to eczema, with round or oval white spots on the uppermost portions of the body. This condition is also referred to as scales.
Significance
White spots on the skin are typically not harmful or contagious. Time and patience are essential in all cases.
