Kings and other royal figures appear on the court deck of playing cards. The court deck developed in Western Europe and today has become the most common deck of playing cards. English court cards were never based on any historical royal figures. However, French card makers often assigned historical royals to the cards. During the 16th century, the industry standardized the representations to represent Charlemagne (hearts), David (spades), Caesar (diamonds) and Alexander (clubs). After the French Revolution and the beheading of Louis VI and Marie Antoinette, the French practice of naming the royal figures on playing cards ended.
