  • Although electrical bug zappers can be effective in eradicating unwanted flying insects, they can actually be harmful to human health. In fact, the process of incinerating bugs may be just as dangerous to humans as using insecticide sprays or powders. Certainly a high voltage device should be a concern to the well-being of humans, but all bug zappers must pass strict guidelines making it nearly impossible for a human to be affected by the electrical charge.

    Heart Concerns

There have been many research projects to determine the potential harm bug zappers may cause humans. These research programs conducted at Kansas State University and the University of Delaware, did not find any connection between the use of bug zappers and heart failure or heart disease.

    Health Problems

However, it was determined that humans can still be harmfully affected by the incineration of an insect. As the insect passes through the electrical field, its body essentially explodes, sending bug particles and residue into the air space around the zapper.

    Residue

Researchers have found that after the bug is zapped, small insect body parts, as well as bacteria and potentially dangerous viruses are left floating in the air. These particulates can all be inhaled by humans up to six feet away from the zapper, potentially causing discomfort, illness and disease.

    Mosquitos

Additional research also found that the bug zapper is not effective in killing the mosquito. Most mosquitoes are not attracted to the ultraviolet ray, which is the main attraction for most insects who wander into the zapper's electric field.

    Mosquito Alternative

Today, some bug zappers include a non-toxic attractant called Octenol which acts as a substitute for human sweat and breath, an attraction for mosquitos. The Octenol attracts the mosquito into a netting devise on the outside of the bug zapper which traps the mosquito, and eventually the insect dies of dehydration.
