Migraines with focal neurological signs are severe headaches that come with visual disturbances such as tunnel vision, sparkling lights, zig zag lines and halos.
Identification
Migraines are severe headaches caused by abnormal brain activity. Migraines sometimes come with warning symptoms called focal neurological signs or auras. These warnings include tunnel vision, visual field disturbances like zig zag lines or halos, sensitivity to light, blurred vision and visual hallucinations.
Types
There are two types of migraines: those with and those without focal neurological signs. Focal neurological signs warn sufferers of an impending headache. Most migraine sufferers get headaches with no advance focal neurological signs.
Theories/Speculation
The cause of focal neurological signs is not known, but they may be a result of abnormal electrical activity spreading through the brain in waves. Migraine triggers include allergies, hormone changes, stress and changes in weather.
Prevention/Solution
Migraine sufferers who have focal neurological signs can often prevent the oncoming headache by taking prescription medication. Once the headache part of a migraine hits, the pain is harder to relieve.
Expert Insight
For unknown reasons, women who get migraines with focal neurological signs have an increased risk of stroke. Anyone struggling with migraines should see a physician for testing and treatment.
