Prostate surgery carries with it the risk of side effects. Urinary incontinence is one complication. A doctor can evaluate the problem and offer treatment options.
Incontinence
Urinary incontinence occurs when you lose bladder control and accidentally leak urine.
Exercise
Kegel exercises help to strengthen pelvic muscles, which in turn help hold urine in the bladder.
Medication
Medications used to treat urinary incontinence after prostate surgery include imipramine and antispasmodics, which relax the muscles of the bladder, preventing spasms that can trigger spills of urine.
Surgery
If noninvasive treatments for incontinence do not help, surgery is an option. A doctor can inject collagen near the bladder sphincter to tighten it. An artificial sphincter can be implanted, or a doctor can provide a urethral sling to support the urethra.
Considerations
While a patient is undergoing treatment for urinary incontinence after prostate surgery, products like absorbent pads and catheter devices are available to help him manage bladder leaks.
