Preventing an unwanted pregnancy requires the mature and responsible individual to choose a reliable method of birth control. There are many forms of birth control available; however, some of them can have dangerous side effects and should be avoided.
Vaginal Ring
This form of birth control may cause blood clots, heart attack, problems with the liver, breast cancer, stroke, depression or toxic shock syndrome.
Oral Contraceptive
The dangers associated with oral contraceptives include blood clots, heart attack, stroke, leg and arm edema and numbness.
Injectable Contraceptive
An injectable form of contraception may cause osteoporosis if used for more than two years. It has also been attributed to jaundice, numbness, arm and leg edema and fever.
Skin Patch
The contraceptive skin patch has the potential complications of lumps in the breasts, chest pain and numbness.
Intrauterine Device
A woman who uses this type of contraceptive puts herself at great risk for infertility in the future due to a great likelihood of infection when using an intrauterine device. Other potential dangers include hysterectomy due to infection, ectopic pregnancy and heavier than normal bleeding during menses.
