Lampe Berger is a brand name for fragrance lamps, also known as effusion lamps or catalytic lamps. These lamps can be used to spread pleasant fragrances and purify the air of possibly harmful microbes.
Function
Fragrance lamps do not burn with a flame, but combust isopropyl alcohol with a low temperature catalytic reaction. This reaction causes air to circulate through the lamp and also releases charge particles into the surrounding air.
Effect on Microbes
The process by which fragrance lamps burn produces small amounts of ozone in the air. Ozone harms and destroys many microorganisms that may be harmful to human health.
Pleasant Smells
Fragrance lamps are often used with a scented fuel. They effectively and quickly spread this smell throughout a room.
Safety
Because fragrance lamps burn at a very low temperature (often around 140° F), they do not pose the fire risk that scented candles do.
History
Before the development of modern antimicrobial agents, lampe bergers were developed to purify the air in hospitals and mortuaries.
