A lump found in the breast may be as simple as a change in the breast tissue or as serious as breast cancer.
Breast Exam
The Mayo Clinic recommends that women perform self breast examinations. By familiarizing themselves with the normal state of their breasts, they are more likely to notice changes.
Breast Cancer
Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump, discharge from the nipple, changes in the skin around the breast and changes in breast size. It's important to contact a doctor if any of these symptoms are noticed.
Mastitis
Mastitis is a condition that usually happens to women who are breast-feeding. In this case, the breast often feels swollen and warm with red skin around the tender area. A burning sensation often accompanies breast-feeding. A doctor can prescribe an antibiotic.
Breast Cysts
Breast cysts are normally accompanied by a lump (or lumps) and breast pain. This pain often worsens right before menstruation.
Contact a doctor
Many women's breasts are naturally lumpy. However, if a particularly large lump is noticed or one increases in size, a doctor should be contacted urgently.
