  • A trojan virus is a malicious program or script that hides itself on a host computer. Once on the host computer, it will perform one or more malicious activities, including: downloading illegal or illicit material off the Internet without permission, keylogging passwords and usernames and transmitting them to a different computer, or giving a hacker access to the infected computer.

    Downloads

A trojan can gain access to a computer if it is inserted into a legitimate or fake application and subsequently downloaded by a computer user. When the program is launched or installed, the trojan will be extracted and will hide itself on the computer.

    Emails

An email sent from an infected computer may have a trojan attached that both the sender and the receiver are unaware of and infect the receiver's computer.

    Browsing

Some websites appear to be harmless, but secretly host malware, including trojans, that will download onto a computer without permission.

    Transfer

An external drive attached to a computer infected with a trojan can also become infected. Though the trojan will not harm the external device, it can inject itself onto a new computer when the external device is plugged in.

    Direct Access

If a computer doesn't have a password or is left logged on, an individual could directly transfer a trojan from a USB drive onto the computer without the computer owner's permission.
