Mini split air conditioners are machines that keep each room in a building cool during hot weather. They work similar to how central air conditioning works and are often used in buildings that don't have the air ducts necessary for central air conditioning.
Coolant
Coolant is a chemical in the air conditioners that can be kept very cold while in a liquid state.
Compressor
The compressor is a unit that is outside of the building. It compresses the coolant, which causes the coolant to get cold.
Evaporator
An evaporator is in each room high up on a wall or on the ceiling. The coolant goes through copper coils and a fan blows over the cold coils, turning the air cool. Many split air conditioners can have up to four evaporators per compressor.
Tubing and Wiring
The tubing allows the coolant to circulate between the compressor and evaporators. The wiring provides the power and allows the units to communicate. The wiring usually runs through the building right along with the tubing.
Thermostat
The thermostat is a small unit in each room that senses the temperature and allows you to control the temperature of the room.
