  • Medicare supplemental insurance policies fill in the gaps in Medicare coverage. These supplemental policies are called Medigap policies and are sold by many private insurance companies who specialize in Medigap, long-term care and short-term care insurance.

    Core Benefits

All Medigap policies have the same five core benefits that include payment for Medicare Part A coinsurance, the first three pints of blood and Medicare Part B coinsurance. Hospice care will be added as a core benefit on June 1, 2010.

    Emergency Treatment

Medigap plans include those that will cover emergency medical treatment outside of the country, which would not be covered by Medicare.

    Preventive Health Care

Medigap policies are available that will help pay preventive health care and at-home recovery costs that are not covered by Medicare. These options will no longer be available after June 1, 2010.

    12 Plans

Twelve different Medigap plans are available at this time. As of June 1, 2010 that number will be reduced to 11.

    Medicare Enrollment

People must be enrolled in Medicare to purchase a Medigap plan.

    Medicare Advantage

Those enrolled in Medicare Advantage Part C cannot purchase a Medigap plan. They must cancel enrollment in Part C before purchasing a Medigap plan.
