  • Back and neck pains are among the most common physical ailments among adults. Both can interfere with the enjoyment of life and get in the way of favorite hobbies and even employment. But what causes neck and back pain?

    Posture

Slouching and slumping unevenly distributes the body's weight, which causes the muscles in one area to work harder. That stress can lead to pain in the neck and back.

    Job stress

Certain types of employment are more likely to lead to back and neck pain. For instance, those who spend long hours sitting in front of a computer are more likely to have neck pain, as staying in one position for long periods without stretching is likely to cause muscle tension. Jobs that require heavy lifting or repetitive bending are likely to strain back muscles.

    Injury

While a physical injury would be an obvious cause, exercise without stretching first can lead to neck and back pain as it is easier to strain cold muscles. Residual back and neck pain after car accidents is also common.

    Age

As people get older, the cushioned discs between vertebrae can naturally begin to lose their padding, resulting in discomfort.

    Warning

Most of the time, back and neck pain is more uncomfortable than dangerous. But in some cases, back pain can be caused by problems in the kidneys or a vascular condition. If back pain gets worse and there's no obvious cause, see a doctor to be on the safe side.
