Heat stroke occurs when the body temperature exceeds 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It can be a life- threatening condition if not treated quickly and properly.
Causes
Heat stroke is caused by exposure to extremely hot weather conditions, strenuous activity or a combination of the two.
Identification
Heat-stroke victims show an elevated heart rate but low blood pressure, shallow breathing, dizziness or loss of consciousness, lack of perspiration and fainting.
Treatment
Heat stroke victims should be moved into a shady, cool area as soon as possible and covered with wet towels to help lower the body temperature until emergency medical personnel can arrive. If possible, give the person cool water to drink.
Risks
Very young and older people are more likely to suffer from heat stroke. You are also more susceptible to heat stroke if you are wearing heavy clothing, have been drinking or are dehydrated.
Prevention/Solution
Avoid extreme heat when possible. If you must work in the heat, wear loose clothing and drink lots of water. In addition, take breaks in a shady, cool area.
