  • Animal growth hormones enable cattle to produce more milk or lean meat in less time and thus save the consumer money. The use of growth hormones is very controversial, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) closely monitors their use.

    Animal Growth Hormone

Somatotropin is a naturally occurring hormone secreted by the pituitary gland; it triggers nutrients to speed up development and increase lactation. Bioengineered bovine somatotropin is called rBST.

    Increased Hormone Production

Estrogen and testosterone production becomes elevated, and Insulin Growth Factors (IGF) are also high in animals who receive rBST. Milk and meat contain high amounts of these hormones.

    Byproducts

Producers of animal feed, pet food, gelatin and glycerol use animal byproducts as well. Pets and people may be at risk with long-term exposure.

    Potential Risks

The Scientific Committee on Veterinary Measures Relating to Public Health in the European Union reported animal hormones pose a risk of disrupting human hormone levels. Such risks include early menstruation and diabetes, as well as breast, prostate and colon cancers.

    Concerns

The European Union has banned use of animal growth hormones due to the concern that children may be more susceptible to even low-level exposure.
