Itchy scalp is a fairly common condition. Scalp itch can cause extreme discomfort and even embarrassment for sufferers. Several possible causes exist, and the cause will determine the method used to treat it.
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic dermatitis, more commonly known as dandruff, can present with severe itching as well as flaking. Caused by the inefficient sloughing of skin cells, teens and young adults suffer most frequently.
Allergies
If you have recently changed detergents, shampoos or other cosmetics, you may be itching as an allergic reaction according to Dr. Michael Araco of FamilyResource.com. Too much hair care product can cause you to itch as well.
Psoriasis
Scaly patches that accompany the itch may indicate psoriasis. Your doctor can confirm this if you feel psoriasis is the problem.
Lice
FamilyResource.com says check your scalp closely for lice if your itching seems more intense in the neck area and over the ears. School age children and their parents are more likely to have these uninvited guests.
Aging and Stress
Many people experience dry, itchy skin as they age. This can include itchy scalp. The National Institutes of Health recommends lowering your stress level if you suffer from itchy scalp. Stress can aggravate the itch regardless of the cause.
