There is no history of any especially tragic virus being written that will attack Apple (Mac) computers. In fact there are only a couple hundred known viruses that have been uncovered in the OS X operating system and they have not been known to cause any major damage.

On the Other: There is Always a Chance

Although the chances that a Mac computer will be inundated with a virus at this point in time are slim to none, the more popular the OS X operating system gets, the more chances of getting a virus will become apparent.

    Bottom Line

Although it isn't considered necessary to arm a Mac computer with a virus scanner, there is always a chance of infection. Installing protection is the only way to make sure that the computer is protected at all times from any kind of malicious software.
