  • A social worker's main duty is working with troubled people, helping them cope with different issues and find possible solutions.

    Duties

Social workers can assist with almost any problem that occurs in everyday life, such as family and personal problems or relationships. Others may do research, or become involved in child-abuse cases.

    Work Environment

Social workers spend most of their time in an office, but some travel locally to visit with clients or attend meetings. Full-time social workers usually work a 40 hour work week, with the occasional evenings or weekends to meet clients or handle emergencies.

    Education

The most common education requirement to become a social worker is a bachelor's degree in social work, however; a master's degree is required for positions in health care or schools. For those who work in a college or university setting, teaching positions require a doctorate.

    Licensing

All U.S. states have different licensing, certification or registration requirements. Most states require two years or 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience for a social worker's license.

    Other Qualifications

Social workers have to be emotionally mature and sensitive to people and their situations. They should be able to handle many responsibilities, work independently, and keep in good standing with clients and their co-workers.
