Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) occurs when the bowel functions are disrupted and do not function normally. It can be caused by a number of reasons, including stress or a bacterial infection.
Constipation
People with IBS may be frequently constipated. They may also have the feeling of needing to defecate, but then being unable to pass stool.
Bloating
As stool, gases and waste products become trapped in the intestine, bloating may occur that can be quite painful if the intestines press on other organs.
Diarrhea
IBS due to anxiety or negative emotional states may induce diarrhea in certain sensitive individuals.
Flatulence
Flatulence often occurs from excessive amounts of sugary foods or starches. During IBS, the intestines may not handle these compounds as efficiently, producing gas instead of stool or urine.
Abdominal Pain
Cramps occur quite frequently in people with IBS. This happens when waste becomes stuck in part of the intestine and is unable to pass. Abdominal pain or cramps often occurs with bloating.
