An HVAC system combines heating, ventilation and air conditioning into one system, making it easier and most energy efficient for your building. In the past 20 to 30 years advances have been to make HVAC systems use less energy through both advances in technology and simple fixes like installing thermostats in each room.
On the Other: Electric fireplaces are cheaper
Because electric fireplaces don't have to handle the air conditioning or ventilation, they use less energy, thereby costing less. However, because the electric fireplace warms a small area, you may need to use a few of them to heat an entire building, making the savings on your energy consumption negligible.
Bottom Line
It depends on the size of the building you're trying to heat. If it's a small home, then the electric fireplace is cheaper. But if you're heating a large building, the HVAC system will be more cost-effective than installing a number of electric fireplaces.
